Housing Opportunity Chair Veronica Malolos and Vice Chair Sarah Ware once again led an engaging and productive meeting. Great work!
Our first guest speaker was Alayna Van Tassel, Deputy Treasurer, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. She serves as the Director of the first of its kind, Office of Economic Empowerment, which was created by the Treasurer to help create better security and stability among the state’s residents. As she remarked, “while potential is equally distributed, opportunity is not.” Through education and outreach, information creates more confidence, which in turn creates better outcomes for a wider population.
Her presentation tied in nicely to our discussion about a proposed policy that will be presented the Public Policy Coordinating Committee—and if approved, then go before our Executive Committee to be presented to the full B.O.D.
The Housing Opportunity Committee supported this proposed policy:
“To support the goals outlined in Promoting Financial Success in the United States: National Strategy for Financial Literacy, which are designed to increase financial literacy to empower school-aged children and young adults to build financial knowledge, skills, and habits that will help them make sound financial decisions and prepare them for homeownership in the future. Further, NAR encourages its associations to work with providers of financial education along with partners such as schools and community organizations to support evidence-based and age appropriate activities.”
